The state of Yucatan is in the east of the Mexican Republic
and limits the north with the Gulf of Mexico, the west and the south with the state of
Campeche, and to the east and the south with the state of Quintana Roo. With respect to
the American Continent it is located in the North hemisphere. Yucatan has a territorial
extension of 43, 257 km², in that 1.556.622 inhabitants live approximately, in 106
municipalities. Its capital is Mérida, located in the northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Hydrography:
Characteristic of Yucatan are natural wells, the cenotes, that take their
name from Mayan ts'onot; these water mouths, made the splendor possible of the Mayan
civilization.
Within the state we found four groups that excel: first
between Chocholá and Kopomá, where it is the Chen-há natural well; the second between
Mayapán and Tekit; the third a the south of Cuzamá and Huhi; and the quarter, near the
coast, the east of Dzilam. The natural well Dzinup or Xkekén, that is not in the surface,
is spectacular even though already have seen many others. The magic and beauty that these
places offer to the visitors, make them appear like the most excellent reason for the
landscape of the plain yucateca. Also and mainly in east, state counts on beautiful
watered down, that they are depressions of the ground that accumulate rainwater forming
pools and the lagoons of cárstico origin, like that surround Cobá.
Orography:
Yucatan is of a marine plain with sandy, wide and flat beaches, that are
to the north of the state, as well as of a parallel bog that connects at intervals with
the sea or forming marshes. This plain represents 5% of the national total and its
altitude oscillates between the 10 and 35m on the level of the sea. The three fourth parts
of the state (center, east and west) are in slight projections; nevertheless, in the
Southeastern of the same one, we can observe the only elevations of the territory called
" the Sierrita " whose altitude fluctuates between the 100 and 300m on the level
of the sea.
Weather
The climate of Yucatan is hot and humid. The rain extension is long and
goes from May to January although it is not rare that it rains during the calls dry months
like February, March and April. The warmest months April and May are, raising sometimes
the temperature until 40º centigrade.
Currency
The Mexican peso. The type of change with respect to the American dollar
and currencies of other countries fluctuates in agreement with the international market.
